BIO

Muhammad Abrar (b. 1987, Pakistan) is a visual artist and educator based in Lahore. He received his BFA (Hons.) from the National College of Arts in 2014. Working across calligraphy, mosaics, and printmaking, Abrar’s practice draws on Islamic mysticism and theology to investigate questions of cosmology and epistemology. His work reflects a sustained engagement with the relationship between sacred knowledge, visual form, and contemporary artistic language.

Abrar has exhibited widely at national and international venues, including a solo exhibition at the Madina Art Center. His practice has reached global audiences through participation in exhibitions and events such as the Auction Gala in New York City, and his works are held in prominent private and institutional collections.

Alongside his studio practice, Abrar has contributed to contemporary art education through teaching and curriculum development. He has taught at the National College of Arts and the Lahore College for Women University, Department of Fine Arts, while also leading projects that seek to bridge modern pedagogical approaches with traditional systems of knowledge.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Fragments carry a quiet yet profound power to embody unity through multiplicity. A single square may seem insignificant among hundreds of others, yet its essence mirrors the unity of the whole. Each movement of placing these elements creates a rhythm of its own, a steady pulse that gathers meaning through repetition and reflection. The work takes shape through paper mosaic and Kufic calligraphy. Hundreds of small fragments are painted, cut, and pasted to form inscriptions within rhythmic compositions of color. The process is slow and deliberate, carrying the intentionality of contemplation. In repetition, patience becomes form, and the fragments begin to surrender their separateness to a greater unity. What emerges is not simply an image but a space of encounter, where rhythm, silence, and harmony invite the possibility of glimpsing the divine in the weaving of parts into a whole.
